Whoa, Dude, Are We Inside a Computer Right Now?

Ben Makuch discusses in his article of September 11, 2012, appeared on vice.com, the concept of Rich Terrile that we might live in a realistic computer simulation. In this text a series of means of persuasion are used. The most striking arguments can be connected to ethos, which means the trustworthiness of the writer. Already the introduction proves the reputation and expertise of the “well-regarded scientist”, who is the director of a NASA laboratory and an author of a book. To make it more clear, the introduction closes with this sentence: “we are going to go ahead take him seriously”. In a later paragraph all his research fields are listed and philosophers are “seriously considering the premise” as well. The tone of the whole article is slightly surprised by the concept but absolutely supportive to the scientist’s idea. Even if one would not agree with his theory otherwise, the ethical appeals are as firm as a rock. In terms of logos the author uses definitions (e.g. that of Moore’s Law), mathematical calculations and parallels, as well as mentioning laws in quantum mechanics. He creates parallels between video games and natural world, which adds to the logical appeal of the article. Although the author did not emphasise pathetic appeal, the reader can identify with the writer’s point of view, as the question of God and the origin of our existence are discussed as well.
